Our Programs


The Graduate School of Journalism offers several academic degree programs designed to meet the needs of both new and experienced journalists.


M.S. Program


The school’s largest program – the Master of Science in journalism – offers students intensive training in one of four specializations: newspaper, magazine, broadcast or new media. The full-time program is completed in one academic year; the part-time program is completed in two or three years.

Ph.D. Program


The Doctor of Philosophy degree gathers and focuses the resources of Columbia University on a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of communications. Students craft individual courses of study drawing upon the wide array of departments and divisions at the university. In addition to the School of Journalism, these include the departments of political science and sociology; the professional schools of business and law; and Teachers College.

The Knight Case Studies Initiative, launched in February 2007, aims to enhance the way journalism is taught in the US and abroad by giving teachers and professionals powerful new tools with which to work. The goal is to train students to think like newsroom managers and news industry leaders.
