Journalism Awards

Finance Your Education

Financing a graduate education is a challenge and a major investment in a student's future. The majority of our students use a combination of personal savings, scholarships and loans to cover the cost of attendance. The Journalism School, in conjunction with the Columbia Student Financial Planning, works with each student to meet the financial needs of their programs' student budget.

Fellowships and Scholarships

The Graduate School of Journalism School is proud to offer approximately $4.2 million annually in fellowships and scholarship to students who demonstrate excellent academic achievement, financial need and exceptional promise for leading careers in journalism.

To apply for financial aid, a student will first submit an online application to the Journalism School. Allocations of the fellowships and scholarships are based on the applicant's merit as evaluated by the admissions committee and financial need as evidenced in the applicant’s 2010-11 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Graduate School of Journalism Scholarship Aid Form. In addition to the applications, some fellowships require a written essay or other work. These requirements will be included in the Graduate School of Journalism Scholarship Aid Form is now available.

All U.S. applicants requesting financial aid must fill out a 2010-11 FAFSA and The Graduate School of Journalism Scholarship Aid form by February 1, 2010. International applicants are required to fill out the Graduate School of Journalism Scholarship Aid Form. All applicants will be sent a reminder after their applications have been received.

Outside Scholarships & Fellowships

Applicants are encouraged to seek funding from all available sources as the need for scholarships far exceeds the amount the Journalism School has to allocate. Start your search early as many scholarships have December and January deadlines.
