April 4, 2007 New York, NY – Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism today announced a generous gift from Daniel J. Edelman, J’41, the founder and chairman of Daniel J. Edelman, Inc. toward the creation of a new student center in its building on Columbia’s Morningside Campus. The new center will fill the long acknowledged need for a space where students and faculty can relax and exchange thoughts and ideas about a large variety of topics affecting the profession.

In recognition of his generous support, Dean Lemann has proposed to the University trustees that the space outside the café in the new student center be named Daniel J. Edelman Plaza. Edelman has close ties to the university as an alumnus of both Columbia College and the Graduate School of Journalism.

“This generous gift from Dan brings us closer to the total we need to complete our new student center,” said Nicholas Lemann, dean of the school. “We appreciate the vision and generosity of friends like Dan, who understand the school’s goals, and who are making it possible for us achieve them.”

"Communications is rapidly changing and diversifying. Journalism training provides core expertise," said Edelman. "Columbia's Graduate School of Journalism remains undoubtedly the nation’s leading institution for teaching the essential skills of journalism that make possible a career in this critical field.”

Edelman, a recipient of Columbia University’s Distinguished Alumnus Award and John Jay Award has had a long and distinguished career, starting his public relations firm in Chicago in 1952. Daniel J. Edelman, Inc. is the world’s largest independent firm and third largest firm overall, with 2,500 employees in 46 offices worldwide. The firm was named PRWeek’s Large Agency of the Year for 2006. Advertising Age named Edelman as one of ten marketing firms to watch in 2007 in its Best Agencies issue. Edelman was also named 2006 Large Agency of the Year and 2005 International Agency of the Year by The Holmes Group. A&R Edelman was formed following the acquisition of A&R Partners in May 2006.

The school’s renovation will include approximately 8,000 square feet of space. Construction is set to begin in May, just after commencement, and will involve areas of the first and second floors of the building as well as exterior space on the plaza. The school has committed to raising additional funds to support the project.
