Prof. Paula Span is Distinguished Teacher of the Year

Prof. Paula Span was named Teacher of the Year by the Class of 2009 during the annual Hudson River boat cruise, a graduation tradition.

The Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award recognizes outstanding work in the classroom, continued service to the profession and talents as a teacher, mentor and journalist. The award is adminstered by The Society of Professional Journalists, the J-School's student government.

In addition to teaching the "Techniques of Feature Writing" elective and advising students on their master's projects, Span is a contributing writer for The Washington Post Magazine and a frequent contributor to The New York Times.

Her book, "When the Time Comes: Families with Aging Parents Share Their Struggles and Solutions," will be published June 10 by Grand Central Publishing. It follows a dozen families facing decisions about eldercare.
