Master of Science Required Courses

To graduate, M.S. students must complete all required courses and pass Reporting & Writing I, Master’s Project, Advanced Reporting & Writing Seminar and Media Workshop.

Full-time students complete their requirements as follows:

Reporting & Writing I 6 points You must have taken and passed RWI before enrolling in any other classes.
Advanced Reporting &
Writing Seminar
6 points Majority of offerings available spring semester only; one to two offered in the fall
Media Workshop 6 points Majority of offerings available spring semester only; one offered in the summer
Master's Project 6 points Completed in the summer for most PT students; Can be done as two, 3-point classes over the academic year
Elective 1 3 points Multiple offerings in fall and spring; two to three offerings in the summer; TV Reporting and Writing is required as the Elective 1 choice for broadcast students. Digital Media Newsroom is required for digital media concentrators.
Elective 2 3 points Multiple offerings in fall and spring; two to three offerings in the summer; students are encouraged to choose a course elsewhere in the University for their second elective

Skills 1 point PT Broadcast students also get a free radio skills class.

*Students who have not already taken one of these two courses may opt to take the four, one-credit courses called Journalism Essentials offered on Fridays.
