Elena is a freelance writer based in New York City. Her magazine work has appeared in VIBE, Marie Claire, Commonweal and PODER. Formerly, she was a staff writer at the Miami Herald, where her beats included several South Florida cities and the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Elena contributed to the coverage of Elián Gonzalez, the 2000 Presidential ballot count, and several other breaking stories. Prior to the Herald she worked as an intern at Newsday’s Queens bureau.

Elena was a staff writer at the Ford Foundation’s quarterly magazine, the FF Report, when she completed the part-time M.S. program at Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism. Her work for the magazine included stories about teacher training on the Navajo reservation, domestic violence and a variety of youth programs. Her overseas assignments included a piece on AIDS in Brazil, a feature on human rights work in Argentina and a report on local government initiatives in the Philippines.
