Joe Cutbirth, a former political reporter and press secretary, writes about media and politics for Huffingtonpost.com and is a frequent guest commentator on the 2008 presidential campaign for ABC News Now. He is working on his first book, “Fake News, Real Politics” and completing his doctoral dissertation at Columbia, where he has taught since 2002. He spent more than a decade as a political writer for The Ft. Worth Star-Telegram, Morris News Service and The Wichita Falls Times, and was communications director for the Texas Democratic Party for Gov. Ann Richards’ 1994 re-election campaign and the Clinton-Gore ‘96/ TDP coordinated campaign. A series of investigative stories he wrote on literacy and public education received the 1984 International Reading Association print media award. His coverage of Texas government and politics - including work that led to the indictment and resignation of the speaker of the Texas House and the ethics trial of U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison - earned awards from The Texas Women's Political Caucus and the Texas and Oklahoma Associated Press Managing Editors. His report on Hutchison's acquittal received the prestigious Katie Award from the Dallas Press Club for best breaking story in Texas in 1994. Cutbirth earned master's degrees from Columbia and Georgetown University; and a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas at Austin. |
