Tom Herman wrote for The Wall Street Journal from 1968, after graduating from Yale, until May 2009, when he retired to devote more time to teaching, writing, travel and tennis. He joined the staff directly after graduating from college in 1968 and was based in several Journal bureaus, including New York, Atlanta, Hong Kong and Singapore.

He covered the credit markets for about a decade and started the Journal’s semi-annual interest rate and economic outlook survey in 1981. From mid-1993 to 2009, he wrote a weekly column on taxes. He still writes a weekly column for The Wall Street Journal Sunday, a personal-finance section that appears in more than 60 newspapers each week around the nation.

He taught a seminar at Yale in the fall of 2006, 2007 and 2009 on business- and financial-news coverage. He is a tennis fanatic.
