Trip Gabriel is the editor of the Sunday Styles and Thursday Styles sections of The New York Times. He joined the Times in 1994 as a reporter in the Style department, where he specialized in front-page stories on social trends, such as the spread of heroin chic, the influence of the echo boom generation and the coming of computer networks to college dormitories.
Prior to joining the paper, he was a contributing editor for Rolling Stone and Outside and a writer for Vanity Fair and the Times Magazine. As the start-up editor of both Styles sections, he recruited distinguished voices such as Guy Trebay, Cathy Horyn and Alex Kuczynski and created popular columns like Modern Love and Critical Shopper.
