Jack Cavanaugh, a native of Stamford, Conn., began his career as a reporter at the New Haven Register. He later worked as a reporter for the Providence Journal, United Press International, Reuters news agency, ABC and CBS News. He then spent 25 years covering sports for The New York Times while also writing for other sections of the newspaper. Cavanaugh has also written for Sports Illustrated, Reader's Digest and a number of other national magazines.

Cavanaugh has taught writing courses at the University of Connecticut and Fairfield and Quinnipiac universities in Connecticut. He has written three books: "Damn the Disabilities: Full Speed Ahead!" (1995); "Tunney" (2006) and "Giants Among Men" (2008). Jack was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in biography for his book on former heavyweight champion Gene Tunney. He also writes a twice-monthly column for the Stamford Advocate.
