Assistant Professor of Journalism The first time I walked through the gates onto campus, I stood still and took in the scene: students running by, the imposing buildings, the feeling that this was a place where serious learning took place. I knew immediately that I would trade places with these students in a heartbeat. And so I did. When I came here as a student, I was in mid-career. I already had been a reporter for 13 years, four of them at The New York Times. Some of my colleagues, and later, my classmates, thought it strange that I would return to school, given that I already had a job most students would love to have. But I wanted something more. I came to Columbia to be among people who not only practiced journalism, but who also thought about how to improve the profession and how best to train the younger generations of journalists. I also wanted to write a book, and was eager to take Sam Freedman's book-writing seminar. Not only did my experience in the mid-career M.S. program improve my skills as a journalist, but I also walked out with the proposal for my book, Finding Mañana.
