Dale Maharidge

Associate Professor of Journalism
Pulitzer Prize winner 1990 for Non-Fiction

If you are going to teach journalism, teach at Columbia. Today, journalists are more important than ever for our civic life. I believe journalism is meant to change the world, and I teach it that way. The Journalism School is like a newsroom where I see myself as an editor nurturing the development of good writers, and Columbia is certainly a great place to be trained as a non-fiction writer. It gives students lifelong training, the ability to learn how to grow and take intellectual risks, and an internal ethical compass for constant guidance. Then there’s basic geography. With Columbia being located in New York City, you can cover the world just by taking the subway. As a teacher, it’s a real pleasure to be here. The students are really motivated and they get jobs in cool places.
