KENN ALTINE Director of Editorial Development Hearst Newspapers Kenn Altine, 43, is the Director of Editorial Development for Hearst Newspapers. In this role, he is responsible for helping Hearst’s newsrooms migrate from a print-centric culture to a digital-centric culture. He fosters collaboration between units on coverage strategies and resource issues and runs the prestigious 2-year Hearst Journalism Fellowship program. Prior to accepting the Houston-based position, Altine worked in a variety of positions at The San Francisco Chronicle, a Hearst paper. In 2000, he was The Chronicle’s interim business editor and later worked as a consultant responsible for helping merge the staffs of The Chronicle and the San Francisco Examiner. In April 2001, he officially joined the staff as Sunday Editor. In February 2002, he was named Associate Managing Editor with responsibility for the operational components of the newsroom, including staff development and training. Altine has consulted at newspapers across the world, from Hagatna, Guam, to Lincoln, Neb., on topics ranging from newspaper design to copy desk structure to senior management development. He also has held editing and managerial positions at newspapers in Kentucky, Nebraska, Texas and Nevada. He was reared in the upper Midwest. He attended Northern Michigan University for two years before graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Communications from the University of Kentucky in 1983.
