Sandy Breland - Fellow 2008

SANDY BRELAND
Executive News Director
KTVK-TV

Sandy Breland was named Executive News Director of KTVK-TV in September, 2007. Prior to that, Breland served eleven years as Executive News Director of WWL-TV, Belo’s CBS affiliate in New Orleans. Breland has been honored with a Peabody, a duPont, and a National Murrow, for her planning and execution of WWL’s coverage during Hurricane Katrina. WWL was the only local broadcaster to remain on the air throughout the storm, providing residents with life-saving information. Breland has also been honored with RTNDF’s First Amendment Award and the Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi Award for public service.

Breland began her career in radio, holding several positions at long-time news powerhouse WWL-AM in New Orleans. She has been honored as a YWCA role model and serves as a member of the First Amendment Coalition of Arizona. Breland holds a B.A. in journalism from Loyola University-New Orleans. She has also attended continuing education sessions at the Poynter Institute, as well as Missouri University’s Management Program for Broadcast Professionals.

Sandy and her husband Dave have two children.
