Joseph J. Kolb - 2008 Fellow

JOSEPH J. KOLB
Publisher
The Gallup Herald Publishing Co.

For over fifteen years, Joseph J. Kolb was a freelance writer for health and fitness magazines and periodicals—contributing to monthly columns in the Albuquerque Journal, Journal of Athletic Training, Exercise for Men Only, Medicine and Rehabilitation, Runner’s World, Running Times, Navajo Times, Journal of Rehabilitation Management, Scholastic Coach, SLAM, and Fit. He has also written general feature pieces for American Indian Report Magazine, New Mexico Magazine, and Vietnam Magazine, and was an editorial board member for Men’s Exercise, and the Journal of Sports Training. After retiring from a 22 year career in sports medicine, Kolb became a full-time journalist in 2001 during which he worked for a year as a news broadcaster for Millennium Media radio stations. He worked as a copy editor for a daily newspaper for a year before moving on to be editor-in-chief of the Voice of the Southwest of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gallup. From 2004-2006 he served as a stringer for The New York Times. Kolb's capstone to his journalistic venture was taking all of his knowledge and enthusiasm for newspapering and starting the Gallup Herald in 2004, which is rapidly becoming one of the fastest growing community newspapers in New Mexico. From concept to execution, Kolb's duties include the full gamut of advertising, editing, writing, general management, layout/design, circulation, and developing new contracts. In the midst of all of this, Kolb found time to write two books, Get Fit Now for High School Basketball (Hatherleigh Press 2002) and Reservation Dreams (Publish America 2004). He is currently completing the biography of Hershey Miyamura, America's first top secret Medal of Honor recipient. He is a member of the New Mexico Press Association and was awarded first place in the 2007 F.H. Shaffer Award, Breaking News Story Category.

Kolb was born September 6, 1958 in Queens, New York City. He was married in 1978 to Rachael
