Jim Schachter has been deputy editor of The New York Times Magazine since May 2006, responsible for new product development and the supervision of a stable of magazines, including T: The New York Times Style Magazine, Play: The New York Times Sports Magazine and Key: The New York Times Real Estate Magazine. He led the creation of T’s new website, established a web strategy (focused on a weekly email newsletter) for Play and is leading a newsroom team creating new local online products for The Times. Last year, he edited two new special issues of The New York Times Magazine, one about the boomer generation and another – The College Issue – which now will be published annually.

Previously he was deputy culture editor of The Times, directing the news and enterprise dimensions of journalism’s preeminent arts and entertainment report, and deputy business editor, leading the paper’s coverage of the Enron debacle and its investigative reporting on related business scandals. Earlier, he was editor of the Sunday "Money & Business" section; of the Jan. 1, 2000, special section marking the start of the new millennium, and of feature coverage in Business Day. Before joining The Times in 1995, he was an award-winning reporter and editor for 10 years at the Los Angeles Times and a reporter for The Kansas City Star and the Jacksonville (Fla.) Journal. He is a graduate of Columbia College, Columbia University, where he studied history and was editor of the Columbia Daily Spectator, the student newspaper. A native of Glendale, Calif., he lives in Summit, N.J., with his wife, three daughters and son.
