Alfredo Carbajal - 2009 Fellow

ALFREDO CARBAJAL
Managing Editor, Al Dia (Dallas, Texas)

Alfredo is the Managing Editor of Dallas-based Al Día, Texas largest Spanish-language daily newspaper, with an average weekly distribution of about 400,000 copies. Carbajal oversees the newsroom which includes website operations.

As the founding editor of Al Día, Carbajal recruited and trained the news staff. He developed systems, work flow procedures and standards that are still in use. One of Alfredo’s main responsibilities is to recruit and provide training and developmental opportunities for the news staff. As the ranking editor At Al Día, Carbajal is also part of the newspaper's managements group, where he works with Marketing, Sales, Finance and the Distribution departments. He serves in a number of committees at The Dallas Morning News.

Carbajal was a member of the Belo Corp.’s initial Emerging Talent class (2003) for management development and was a participant in the first ASNE/UNITY Diversity Summit in 2004. He is a lifetime member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ,) a member of the American Society of Newspaper Editors (ASNE) and the Inter American Press Association (IAPA.)

Previously, he was editor of the weekly La Prensa in Riverside Calif. He started his journalism career at El Diario (Juarez, Mx) in 1988 as news assistant and later rose through the ranks to become Assistant Managing Editor. He has a degree in Journalism (print-media) and a minor in management from the University of Texas at El Paso. He's married and resides in Dallas, Texas.
