All multimedia assets (audio and video) need to be uploaded to the FatWire Content Management System before they can be added to a page. Please email
web-request@lists.jrn.columbia.edu if you want to add a link to an AUDIO CLIP or a VIDEO. If you have digital audio or video that needs to be encoded, compressed and placed on the streaming server, email av-request@jrn.columbia.edu.
Here are instructions on how to add a multimedia asset into the database and post it to a page.
Add a New Multimedia Asset
All multimedia assets are stored under the DOCUMENTS tab located on the left-hand side of the screen. Here, you’ll see all of the assets sorted by multimedia category (e.g.: Award Audio, Video).
- Click on the DOCUMENTS tab on the left-hand side of the screen.
- Move your cursor to the white space below the DOCUMENTS tab. Right-click on your mouse and a box will appear. Select “New Document” from the list of options.
- You’ll see a page with empty fields appear in the work area on the right side of the screen. The top of the page will say “Binary (Binary).”
- Enter the name of your multimedia asset in the NAME field (e.g.: Columbia audio). Don’t include any punctuation marks. This title will be stored in the CMS database. You may want to come up with a consistent naming convention to keep track of your assets.
- Select JRNRenderAudio (audio asset) or JRNRenderVideo (video asset) from the pull-down menu next to the TEMPLATE field.
- Leave the DESCRIPTION, FILENAME, PATH and EXTERNAL ITEM ID fields blank.
- Save your asset in the correct category folder (e.g.: Award Audio, Video). Click on the correct category folder under the DOCUMENTS tab on the left-hand side of the screen.
- Look for the BINARY CATEGORY field in your work area on the right-hand side of the page. Click on the “Add Selected Items” button. You will see your selected category folder appear under the button.
- Now add the name of your multimedia asset to the TITLE field. Example: Award Audio.
- Now you are ready to upload the multimedia file to the system. Paste the full URL of the audio or video asset in the DOCUMENT field.
-
Leave the ABSTRACT field blank.
- Click the “Save” button at the bottom or top of the page. Your multimedia asset will be saved. Preview your work in staging (https://stgcms.journalism.columbia.edu/preview) and make changes if needed.
