Steve Dichter brings over 25 years of experience in improving the performance of large, complex institutions. His career has spanned working as a senior executive, entrepreneur, consultant and author/speaker in both the private and public sectors.
Most recently, Steve was Deputy Cabinet Secretary for Taxation and Revenue for the State of New Mexico. In that capacity he oversaw the day-to-day operations and development of a 1,000 person agency that is responsible for serving over 1.0 million taxpayers and administering over 40 different tax programs that contribute $5.0 billion to New Mexico’s development. The agency is also responsible for the Motor Vehicle Department with over 60 field offices around the state. In his two years of public service, Steve championed legislative and structural reform that to enable the agency to provide major improvements in service and efficiency.
From 1999 through 2002, Steve was President and Chief Operating Officer of M2 Automotive, a leading consolidator in the auto collision repair business, with the dominant position in the California market. Steve led the turn-around, integration and development of this 27-unit chain with over 700 employees. Under his three year leadership, revenues grew 40% and unit profitability improved 63%. Key to this performance improvement was creating a disciplined field organization with a focus on quality, service and productivity.
Steve joined M2 from Security Capital Group, Inc., a global real estate investment and management company. Steve was a Managing Director responsible for oversight of a number of North American subsidiary companies, plus leadership of the Corporate Strategy, Investor Relations, and the Global Real Estate and Economic Research functions.
Prior to joining Security Capital, Steve was a senior partner with McKinsey & Company, Inc. where, for 20 years, he was counselor to top management of Fortune 500 companies on strategic, operational and organizational performance across a broad range of industries. He has also done substantial pro bono work in the public sector with the New York City Police Department, the New York City Board of Education and with the U.S. Department of Labor. Steve was also a leader of McKinsey’s worldwide organization performance practice with responsibilities for developing new services, training, research and development.
Steve is a co-author of Real Change Leaders (Random House, 1996; Business Week Best Seller, 1996) and speaks frequently on issues of organization performance and change.
He serves on the board and as treasurer of Homewise, a Santa Fe-based developer of affordable housing. He is the former Chairman of Young Citizens, an organization that works to integrate community service projects into middle school curriculum. He is also a former trustee of the New York City Police Foundation.
Steve received his MBA from Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration (1979) and his BA in history from Swarthmore College (1975).
