Columbia Publishing Course

For more than 60 years, the Columbia Publishing Course has provided an intensive introduction to all aspects of book and magazine publishing in an intensive six-week summer program.

Students learn from writers, editors and publishers; design directors and illustrators; advertising experts and publicists – all of whom walk students through the publishing process from the evaluation of an original manuscript to the marketing of a finished product. The instructors are leaders in the industry, and in some cases, graduates of the course as well.

Each summer, more than 100 students attend the course, recruited largely from colleges and universities around the country. Working with them are 125 instructors who between them cover three lectures a day and also conduct week-long workshops throughout the course. The course is divided into sessions dedicated to book publishing, magazine publishing and collaborative simulations.

Resume workshops, where students work one-on-one with professionals, are held throughout the course. Students also meet with human resources professionals to discuss interviewing and the job search process. The course has an excellent job placement rate; people in the publishing industry know that course graduates make excellent employees. The course helps students find their first jobs; the connections stay with them throughout their careers.

Information sessions are held at colleges and universities across the country during the months of January, February and March. Applications are due in late March.

The 2008 program will run from June 23 to August 1.
