New Hire Quick Reference Guide
A one stop resource for all of your new hire needs

Welcome to Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism! You should find this quick reference guide helpful as you navigate your way around the school and university.

University ID Card

Once your new hire paperwork has been completed you will be able to go to 204 Kent Hall to obtain your Columbia University ID card. This ID is not only a form of employee identification, but it enables you to access doors within the school as well as through out the University.

UNI / University Email Account Activation

Once you complete your new hire paperwork you will be given a UNI/University email account. Activate your UNI

Your UNI is needed to access employee only Websites and other university applications and should be activated as soon as possible following receipt.

New Hire Orientation

All benefit-eligible employees must attend a New Hire Orientation hosted by CU-HR and held at the Studebaker Building located at 615 West 131st Street.

Benefit Enrollment

Please note you must elect your benefits within 31 days of your eligibility date. Otherwise you will be unable to enroll until the next open enrollment period.

For specific health and benefit questions you may call the CU-HR Benefits Service Center at 212-851-7000 M-F, 9am – 4pm.

Pay Period

All salaried employees (Monthly) are paid on the last business day of each month.

Support Staff employees are paid every two weeks (bi-weekly) and are expected to submit completed and signed time sheets on a timely basis.

The University and your department advise and encourage all employees to take advantage of direct deposit. By signing up for direct deposit your check can be deposited into any account of your choice (up to two accounts).

Otherwise paychecks are available for pick-up from your local HR office.

Business Cards

Business Cards can be ordered through our Printing Services Department located on the 1st Floor of the Journalism Building by going to the link listed below. You will first need to have your UNI activated, and have the 6-digit account code that needs to be billed.

Building Support

To report a building problem within your office space or throughout the Journalism School building please visit the Building Services at help.jrn.columbia.edu

Office Supplies

Building is also your resource for office supplies. You may visit the Mailroom in room 104 or visit Building Services at help.jrn.columbia.edu

Photocopying

If your supervisor is unable to provide you with one, please visit Building Services at help.jrn.columbia.edu for a copy machine ID number and pass-code.

Technical Support / Set-up

To request help in activating your UNI, report a problem with your computer/printer, or to request software installed, please visit help.jrn.columbia.edu for assistance.

Voice Mail Activation

In order to activate the voice mail feature on your phone line you must dial ext. 4-7920 and follow the prompts for activating your mailbox. The default password is 111.
