The Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma, a project of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, provides journalists around the world with the resources necessary to produce informed, innovative and ethical news reporting, drawing on a global network of news professionals, mental health experts, educators and researchers.

Dart Center West

Based at the University of Washington Department of Communication in Seattle, Dart Center West specializes in development of innovative trauma-awareness curricula and educational tools for the journalism classroom, and serves as a base for West Coast Dart Center programs.

Dart Center Research Laboratory

The Dart Center’s research unit, based at the University of Tulsa Department of Psychology, has conducted pioneering peer-reviewed studies on newsrooms and traumatic stress, and encourages wider scientific and scholarly inquiry into the nuances of news coverage of traumatic events.

Seminars and Training Programs

The Dart Center sponsors specialized training and education for working journalists focusing on specific events and issues around the world, ranging from family violence and natural disasters to war, terrorism and civil conflict.

Newsroom Training and Consultation

The Dart Center provides a range of trauma awareness and support to newsrooms around the world, from management and staff briefings to the development of extensive ongoing newsroom training and support programs.

Peer Training and Support

The Dart Center trains working journalists to provide volunteer education to colleagues through professional organizations and newsrooms.
