Smarter Social Media for Journalists, Bloggers and Media Professionals
A four-week course (plus 1) with Prof. Sree SreenivasanThe Continuing Education unit at Columbia's Graduate School of Journalism will be holding another edition of its immensely successful workshop on Smarter Social Media for Journalists, Bloggers and Media Professionals over four Thursday evenings in October.
In this course, Prof. Sree Sreenivasan will teach participants how to use social media, including sites such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, FourSquare, YouTube, among others, to find new story ideas, trends and sources; connect with readers and viewers in new ways; bring attention and traffic to their work; and create, craft and enhance their personal brand. There will also be opportunities to work one-on-one with the instructor and his assistants.

There will be an optional session on Tuesday, Nov. 11 (6:30 - 9 p.m.) as Prof. Sreenivasan hosts "Changing Media Landscape, 2010," an annual conversation among five top media influencers. Food and drink will be served.

Five-Day Intensive Digital Media Boot CampRegistration is now closed. Monday, August 2 - Friday, August 6, 2010 Where: Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, 2950 Broadway, New York, NY 10027 Overview: Over the course of five days, participants will learn the basics of visual storytelling concepts through video production and post-production with Final Cut Pro (for Mac). Participants will leave with concrete skills and a better understanding of the technologies that are transforming the news business. Field Work: Equipped with the professional production tools, participants will learn the fundamentals of video production, including shooting techniques, sound collecting, interview techniques, lighting, field production tips, story planning and scripting. Post-Production: Participants will learn to edit video and audio using Final Cut Pro. Topics covered include: log and transfer, file management, editing sequences, audio mixing, importing assets (video, audio and photos), animating images, creating audio slideshows, advanced editing techniques, and exporting finished videos. Course Requirements: This is a fast-paced class that requires participants to be comfortable working with computers at an intermediate level, as well as with new software.
