Columbia Journalism School students are turning their classwork into clips and even doing additional freelance work on the side. Here is a collection of their published work from September and early October.

Sept. 11: Hristina Tisheva '12 covers a firefighters' memorial, "Remembering Lost Friends & Colleagues at Ladder 19 in Morrisania," for the Bronx Times and Bronx.com. Tisheva published two additional articles in September, about a pilot speed-reduction program and possible post office closure, for the same outlet.

Sept. 12: Anne Cohen '12 and Ilana Kowarski '12 reported on a first-responders ceremony in Coney Island, "Firefighters Commemorate September 11 and MCU Park," published in the Brooklyn Eagle.

Sept. 12: Lani Conway '12 also covered a commemoration of 9/11 in "Cromity & Day: United by Music," about two jazz singers, for the Fort Greene-Clinton Hill Patch.

Sept. 12: Charu Kasturi '12 looked into prevention initiatives in Inwood and Washington Heights in "With Rising Crime and Fewer Cops, Civilians Eye Street Patrols" for City Limits. Kasturi published another piece with City Limits, "Harlem: Will Booze Ban Boost Barbers," in late August; and another in late September, about a day care center crisis.

Sept. 13: Mackenzie Issler '12 and Cory Bennett '12 detailed one woman's double loss for the Brooklyn Eagle in "Woman Loses Two Friends: One on 9/11, the Other in Crown Heights Shootout."

Sept. 14: Ryan Neal '12 reviewed a four-day album-release concert series, "Umphrey's McGee New York Musical Gumbo," for Virgin.com.

Sept. 14: Chase Scheinbaum '12 reported a subway crime in "Quick-thinking mechanic helps cops nab suspected turnstile-jumper," which was picked up by the Daily News.

Sept. 15: Robert Owen "Buster" Brown '12 wrote about Billy Reid's New York Fashion Week for Social Primer: "Close Up the Honky Tonks."

Sept. 16: Jasmeet Sidhu '12 covered an Eid al-Fitr ceremony for the Norwood News, "Huge Turnout for Muslim Holiday Event."

Sept. 16: Vikram Patel '12 wrote "Barron Decries Housing Subsidy Axe," about the termination of the Advantage Work Program for homeless people, for Black Star News.

Sept. 19: Gerren Gaynor '12 covered an annual Harlem event in "'Stop the Violence' Message Pervades African American Day Parade" for News One.

Sept. 20: Rani Molla '12 photographed a Harlem building collapse, and her images were picked up by the Wall Street Journal: "Building Collapses onto Bus in Harlem."

Sept. 21: Anne Cohen '12 reported more for the Brooklyn Eagle: "In Brighton: Russian Jewish Immigrants Are Uneasy About Upcoming U.N. Vote," about the vote on Palestinian statehood.

Sept. 21: Linda Thompson '12 and Jenny Rogers '12 documented a community conversation for the Queens Gazette in "Astoria Community Meets to Discuss the Events of 9/11."

Sept. 22: Elizabeth Dilts '12 delved into recent violence at Flushing's Bland Houses, "Spate of shootings worries Bland tenants," for the Queens Chronicle.

Sept. 23: Nathaniel Herz '12 tells of a bakery's triumphant reopening for the Bronx's Norwood News in "Bakery Returns to Its Roots on Bainbridge Avenue"

Sept. 24: Hristina Tisheva '12 writes of a pilot project -- "First-Ever 'Slow Zone' in NYC to be Executed by Early October" -- for the Bronx Times and Bronx.com.

Sept. 25: Adrian Baumann '12 covers "Occupy Wall Street's Leaderless Democracy," published in The Indypendent.

Sept. 27: Charu Kasturi '12 wrote about corruption investigations at La Familia Unida, a city-funded day care center, for City Limits in "Workers, Kids Suffer in Corruption Probe's Aftermath."

Sept. 27: Salim Essaid '12 reported on the King of Jordan's visit to Columbia for the World Leaders Forum. His article, "King gives 'insight and solutions' to Mideast problems, Arab Spring," was printed in the Jordan Times.

Sept. 29: Bianca Consunji '12 reported the verdict, "No Jail Time For Bronx Woman Who Starved Dog To Death" for Gothamist.

Sept. 29: Neha Prakash '12 reported a street renaming, "Cecere of Jackson Hts. honored for service," for the Queens Chronicle. The publication also ran Prakash's article "India astrologer plies craft in Jackson Hts." and a photo series she took during the 35th Annual Hispanic Day Parade in Jackson Heights (both published Oct. 6).

Sept. 29: Jaclyn Kostek '12 profiles NYC's best Midtown office cleaner, Norma Quizi, for West Side Spirit and Our Town: "Adding Life to New York Life."

Oct. 4: Hristina Tisheva '12 looks into "Morrisania Post Office Up for Possible Closure" for the Bronx Times and Bronx.com.

Oct. 5: Sharyn Jackson '12 had the cover story in the Santa Fe Reporter, "Undercover: Clara Taylor performs abortions where no other doctor will," about the hidden world of fly-in abortion providers.

Oct. 5: Ines Novacic '12 landed Irish Central's home page for the day with "Undocumented Irish have no trouble finding work in New York City."

And Paul Grossinger '12 wrote "The Sports Fan's Place in the Sports World" and "PacMay vs. LeoHag," published on sites he owns (www.thebestsportsblog.com and www.thebestboxingblog.com, respectively). The articles were linked to and featured prominently on several additional websites.
