John B. Oakes Award - How to Enter

The 2011 Oakes Award and its $5,000 prize will go to the author(s) of articles or single-topic series on an environmental issue initially published between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2011. The deadline for submissions is January 31, 2012.

  • A series must be designated as such by the publication when it is printed.  A regular column may also be submitted as a series.
  • Newspaper, magazine articles, and print-based multimedia projects are eligible.  The judges may divide the award among the writer and the videographer, photographer, and/or illustrator, if their work substantially strengthens the winning piece.
  • Fiction cannot be considered.
  • A writer may submit up to six articles.
  • Each article must have an entry form.
  • A translation must be supplied for any article not written in English.

Uploading Items: ALL materials should be formatted and uploaded as PDFs.  Supporting multimedia presentations can be sent on a CD or as URLs.  Links must remain live through March 2012.

The name of the photographer or graphic artist should appear on all entry forms for visual elements.
