Ten Knight-Bagehot Fellows in economics and business journalism have been named by the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism for the 2013-2014 academic year. They include journalists from The Wall Street Journal, Associated Press, American Banker, The Morning Call, National Journal and other news organizations in Washington, D.C., China, Nepal and Ghana.

2013 Lukas Awards announced

Andrew Solomon, an author with an interest in emotional health, won the J. Anthony Lukas Book Prize for his book that explores what it’s like for children to be markedly "different" from their parents. Robert Caro, a Pulitzer Prize- winning writer, won the Mark Lynton History Prize for his profound understanding of Lyndon Johnson. The J. Anthony Lukas Work-in-Progress Award was won by reporter Beth Macy for her book about a Virginia furniture store owner threatened with the loss of his business.

The Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma, a project of the Columbia Journalism School, today announced the winners of the 2013 Dart Awards for Excellence in Coverage of Trauma. This year’s winners are: the Los Angeles Times; and the collaborative team of Pro Publica, Fundación MEPI and This American Life. Honorable mentions go to The York Daily Record, The New York Times ‘At War’ Blog and The New York Times Magazine.

J-School holds largest Career Expo in its history

As the Journalism School prepares to end its yearlong centennial celebration, it set a new major milestone Saturday by staging the largest career fair in the school's history. The 135 companies that sent 275 recruiters to Columbia Journalism School Career Expo to meet soon-to-be graduates created an overflow eventin Roone Arledge Auditorium, establishing this as the largest journalism school job fair in the nation.

Steve Coll appointed Dean of Journalism School

Columbia University President Lee C. Bollinger today announced his appointment of two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Steve Coll as the new Dean of the Graduate School of Journalism, effective July 1, 2013. Coll replaces Nicholas Lemann, who has served as dean since 2003.

Chicago Tribune reporters win 2012 John B. Oakes Award

The Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism announced today that Chicago Tribune reporters Patricia Callahan, Michael Hawthorne and Sam Roe have won the 2012 John B. Oakes Award for Distinguished Environmental Journalism for their year-long investigative series “Playing with Fire.”

Moises Velasquez MA ’06 had an opinion piece in the New York Times Week in Review. The story, “Who has the Guts for Gluten?” poses the question of why the prevalence of celiac disease, an autoimmune condition that damages the lining of the small intestine and prevents absorption of foods needed to maintain healthiness, has quadrupled in the last 50 years.
