ABOUT THE JURY

The Afred I. duPont Columbia University Awards jury is comprised of nine journalism professionals with expertise in broadcast, radio and digital media.  The jury screens and evaluates hundreds of submissions, awarding batons to news organizations and reporters that produce innovative, impactful and entrpreneurial stories that serve a public interest. Each member is appointed to a three-year term, which is renewable up to three times at the discretion of the director and jury chair.

The current jury members are:

  • Bill Wheatley, duPont Jury chair; former Executive VP of NBC News
     
  • A’Lelia Bundles, author, journalist and former network television news executive
     
  • Callie Crossley, host, "The Callie Crossley Show," WGBH Radio; former producer, ABC News and the PBS series "Eyes on the Prize"
     
  • Anne Garrels, former foreign correspondent, NPR; independent correspondent and analyst on foreign affairs
     
  • Mark Jurkowitz, associate director, Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism;  former media critic
     
  • John Martin, former correspondent, ABC News; photographer and editor for World Tennis Gazette; adjunct professor at Columbia Journalism School
     
  • Michael Skoler, vice president for Interactive Media, PRI
     
  • Al Tompkins, broadcast/online group leader, Poynter Institute, St. Petersburg, Fla.; former local station news director, producer and reporter
     
  • Richard Wald, Fred Friendly Professor of Journalism, Columbia Journalism School
