Ms. Newman has worked at The New York Times since 1991. She is the current Community Editor of SchoolBook, a website of The New York Times and WNYC. SchoolBook strives to provide news, data and conversation for — and by — a broad audience of New York City parents, teachers, principals, policy makers and researchers. She also writes the Principal’s Office feature on SchoolBook, a Q&A with principals about leadership and school management.
Prior to becoming the Community Editor of SchoolBook, she was an editor and reporter on the News Desk, previously known as the Continuous News Desk. This desk, copied by many other newspapers, was created to bridge the print operation with the Web and all other forms of digital journalism.
As a reporter at The New York Times, her beats have included the Bronx, the New York City public school system, higher education, housing in New York City, New Jersey government and general assignments. She also served as the assignments editor on the Metro Desk, and as editor of the New Jersey regional weekly section and the Connecticut regional weekly section.
Prior to coming to The Times, she worked as a reporter at the The Los Angeles Times, as Latin America correspondent for The Sacramento Bee, city hall reporter at the Dallas Times Herald, reporter at The San Diego Union and reporter at the Corpus Christi Caller-Times.
Ms. Newman has a BFA in journalism from Southern Methodist University, Dallas, and an M.S. from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
